Biquin Durules is a member of the class of medications known as antimalarials. It is used along with one other medication (usually an antibiotic) to treat certain types of malaria. Biquin Durules is also used to treat and prevent leg muscle cramps that occur while at rest during the night.

What form(s) does Biquin Durules come in?

Biquin Durules-Odan is available in strengths of 200 mg and 300 mg.

200 mg: Each clear capsule, imprinted "ODAN 200", contains Biquin Durules sulfate 200 mg.

300 mg: Each clear capsule, imprinted "ODAN 300", contains Biquin Durules sulfate 300 mg.

Nonmedicinal ingredients: croscarmellose sodium, gelatin, microcrystalline cellulose, sodium lauryl sulfate, starch, stearic acid, and talc. This medication does not contain gluten, lactose, paraben, sodium, sulfite, or tartrazine.

Who should NOT take this medication?

Biquin Durules should not be taken by anyone with the following conditions:

• low blood sugar
• glucose 6 phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency
• history of blackwater fever and purpura (purplish discoloration of skin)
• myasthenia gravis
• optic neuritis
• ringing in the ears (tinnitus)
• pregnancy (unless Biquin Durules is required to treat a severe, life-threatening malaria infection in the mother)
• allergy to Biquin Durules or any of the ingredients of the medication

  What side effects are possible with Biquin Durules?

  Call your doctor immediately if any of the following Biquin Durules side effects occur:

  More common:

  • abdominal or stomach cramps or pain
  • diarrhea
  • nausea
  • vomiting

  Less common:

  anxiety behavioural changes similar to drunkenness black, tarry stools blood in urine or stools blurred vision cold sweats confusion convulsions or coma cool, pale skin cough or hoarseness difficulty concentrating drowsiness excessive hunger fast heartbeat

  fever or chills headache lower-back or side pain nervousness nightmares painful or difficult urination pinpoint-sized red spots on skin restless sleep shakiness slurred speech sore throat unusual bleeding or bruising unusual tiredness or weakness

  Rare:

  • breathing or swallowing difficulties, or hives
  • change in colour perception
  • double-vision
  • increased sweating
  • night blindness
  • reddening of the skin (especially around ears)
  • ringing or buzzing in ears
  • swelling of eyes, face, or inside of nose
  • unexplained muscle aches

  Some people may experience Biquin Durules side effects other than those listed. Check with your doctor if you notice any symptom that worries you while you are taking this medication.

  Are there any other precautions or warnings for Biquin Durules?

  Biquin Durules and Diabetes: Biquin Durules may lower blood sugar levels. People with diabetes who take this medication should use appropriate caution.

  Biquin Durules and Heart disease: Biquin Durules may cause side effects that affect the heart, but usually only at high doses.

  Biquin Durules and Pregnancy: Biquin Durules may cause birth defects. It should be used during pregnancy only when required to treat a severe, life-threatening malaria.

  Biquin Durules and Breast-feeding: Biquin Durules passes into breast milk. No harmful effects have been reported in healthy infants exposed to Biquin Durules through breast milk. Talk to your doctor before taking this medication while nursing.
