What is Epipen injection?

Epipen (Epipen®) can help to open up air passages and make breathing easier for people with various lung problems such as severe asthma. Epipen also treats extremely severe allergic reactions and certain heart problems. Generic Epipen injections are available. Generic auto-injector devices are not yet available.

What should my health care professional know before I receive Epipen?

They need to know if you have any of the following conditions:
•blood vessel disease
•brain damage or disease
•diabetes
•glaucoma
•heart disease
•high blood pressure
•over active thyroid
•an unusual or allergic reaction to Epipen, sulfites, other medicines, foods, dyes, or preservatives
•pregnant or trying to get pregnant
•breast-feeding

How should I use this medicine?

Epipen is for injection under the skin, into a muscle or into a vein. Injections can be given by a health care professional in a clinic or hospital setting. An auto-injector form is available for self-administration by patients who suffer a severe allergic response to certain stimuli. Read the directions carefully so that you will know how to use the auto-injector properly. Do not remove the safety cap until you are ready to use the auto-injector. When you need to use it, remove the gray cap. Place the black tip on the thigh at a right angle to your leg. Press the tip hard into your leg until the automatic injection functions. Hold in place for several seconds and then remove and safely throw away. Massage your leg for 10 seconds. Do not use more often than directed.

What if I miss a dose?

If you miss a dose, use it as soon as you can. If it is almost time for your next dose, use only that dose. Do not use double or extra doses.

What should I watch for while taking Epipen?

Check with your prescriber or health care professional if your symptoms do not improve within 20 minutes of Epipen use, or if they get worse.

Keep an auto-injector handy if you need Epipen ready for use to combat possible severe allergic reactions. Make sure that you have the phone number of your prescriber or health care professional and local hospital ready. Remember to check the expiration date regularly and replace the auto-injector when it becomes outdated.

Do not use Epipen products if you are pregnant, especially during labor, as Epipen may delay contractions.

If you have diabetes, Epipen may increase your blood sugar. Check your blood sugar often and contact your prescriber or health care professional if you have any problems.

Do not use an Epipen solution that appears cloudy, pinkish, or brownish.

Do not treat yourself for coughs, colds or allergies without checking with your prescriber or health care professional. Nonprescription medicines may contain ingredients that will increase the effects of your medicine.
