How does Remicade work? What will it do for me?

Remicade belongs to the class of medications called biological response modifiers. It is used to treat severe Crohn's disease as well as moderate to severe rheumatoid arthritis that has not responded to treatment with methotrexate. It works by "turning down" parts of the immune system that are believed to be involved in these conditions.

Your doctor may have suggested Remicade for conditions other than the ones listed in these drug information articles. If you have not discussed this with your doctor or are not sure why you are taking Remicade, speak to your doctor. Do not stop taking Remicade without consulting your doctor.

How should I use Remicade?

Remicade is given by injection in a hospital setting. The dose depends on the condition being treated, and is based on body weight.

It is very important that Remicade be used as prescribed by your doctor.

What form(s) does Remicade come in?

Each vial of sterile, white, freeze-dried powder for I.V. infusion contains Remicade 100 mg. Nonmedicinal ingredients: dibasic sodium phosphate, monobasic sodium phosphate, polysorbate 80, and sucrose. Remicade does not contain preservatives.

Who should NOT take Remicade?

Remicade should not be taken by anyone who:

is allergic to Remicade, mouse proteins, or any other ingredients in the medication
has severe infections such as sepsis, abscesses, tuberculosis, and opportunistic infections

Infections: Remicade can increase the risk of developing an infection. If you notice signs of an infection such as fever, chills, pain, swelling, or pus, contact your doctor as soon as possible.

Pregnancy: Remicade is not recommended for use during pregnancy. Women who may become pregnant should use an effective method of birth control while they are taking Remicade, and for at least six months after the last treatment.

What other drugs could interact with Remicade?

Tell your doctor or prescriber about all prescription, over-the-counter (non-prescription), and herbal medications that you are taking. Also tell them about any supplements you take. Since caffeine, alcohol, the nicotine from cigarettes, or street drugs can affect the action of many medications, you should let your prescriber know if you use them. Depending on your specific circumstances, your doctor may want you to:
stop taking one of the medications,
change one of the medications to another,
change how you are taking one or both of the medications, or
leave everything as is.
An interaction between two medications does not always mean that you must stop taking one of them. In many cases, interactions are intended or are managed by close monitoring. Speak to your doctor about how any drug interactions are being managed or should be managed.
