How does Sandostatin work? What will it do for me?
Octreotide is a man-made (synthetic) version of a naturally occurring hormone known as somatostatin. Octreotide has similar effects on the body, but acts for a longer period of time than somatostatin.
Octreotide is used to treat severe diarrhea and other symptoms that occur with certain cancers of the intestine.
Octreotide also reduces the amount of growth hormone in the body, and so it is also used to treat acromegaly, a condition associated with overgrowth of hands, feet, and parts of the face caused by too much growth hormone.
Octreotide is also used for emergency treatment of particular causes of stomach and esophagus bleeding.
Your doctor may choose to use Sandostatin for other conditions not listed here. If you're unsure why you are taking Sandostatin, please ask your doctor.
How should I use Sandostatin?
The recommended dose and dosing schedule of octreotide varies according to the specific disease being treated, the response to therapy, and the other drugs or treatments being used. It is injected under the skin (subcutaneous or s.c.) or as a long-lasting version into the gluteal muscle (the buttocks).
If you are giving yourself injections it is very important that you follow the doctor's instructions and the instructions included with the medication very carefully. The short-acting octreotide injection should be evenly spaced over 24 hours in order to control symptoms most effectively. If you miss a dose of the short-acting medication, use it as soon as you remember it. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not double doses.
If you miss your appointment to receive the long-acting version of Sandostatin, make another appointment as soon as possible.
Many things can affect the dose and schedule of medication that a person needs, such as body weight, other medical conditions, and other medications. If your schedule is different from the ones listed here, do not change it without talking with your doctor.
Octreotide can cause a number of side effects. Your doctor, nurse or pharmacist
can advise you on how to reduce the effects of nausea and
vomiting. Keep track of any side effects and report them to
your doctor as suggested in the section "What side effects
are possible with Sandostatin?"
Who should NOT take Sandostatin?
Sandostatin should not be used by anyone allergic to octreotide or the nonmedicinal ingredients
