How does Amatine work? What will Amatine do for me?
Amatine belongs to the class of medications called vasopressors. Amatine is used to relieve symptoms of low blood pressure (such as dizziness, lightheadedness, and fainting) for people with Parkinson's disease, diabetes, Bradbury-Eggleston syndrome, and Shy-Drager syndrome. It works by constricting the blood vessels, causing an increase in blood pressure.
Your doctor may have suggested Amatine for conditions other than the ones listed in these drug information articles. If you have not discussed this with your doctor or are not sure why you are taking this medication, speak to your doctor. Do not stop taking Amatine without consulting your doctor.
How should I use Amatine?
The usual recommended starting adult dose of Amatine is 2.5 mg three times daily. The dose may be increased up to a maximum daily dose of 30 mg. People with kidney disease may need a lower dose. Amatine may also be taken as frequently as six times a day, as long as the maximum dose is not exceeded. Amatine may be taken with or without food. The last dose of the day should be taken at least four hours before bedtime. This medication is started under close medical supervision, usually in a hospital, clinic, or doctor's office. Blood pressure should be measured after the first and second daily doses on the first day, then daily for the first month of treatment, then twice weekly thereafter.
Many things can affect the dose of Amatine that a person needs, such as body weight, other medical conditions, and other medications. If your doctor has recommended a dose different from the ones above, do not change the way that you are taking the medication without consulting your doctor.
It is important that this medication be taken exactly as prescribed by your doctor. If you miss a dose, take it as soon as possible and continue on with your regular schedule. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue on with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.
