BuSpar is an anxiolytic agent. It is also a serotonin receptor agonist that is classified as an azaspirodecanedione compound. The molecules of this drug bind to 5-HT type 1A serotonin receptors on the presynaptic neurons in the dorsal raphe and on the postsynaptic neurons in the hippoccampus, which inhibits the release of 5-HT-containing neurons in the dorsal raphe.
BuSpar is given to patients who have anxiety disorders. It is used as a short term relief for anxiety. This drug is contraindicated in patients who are hypersensitive to the drug or to any of its components. It is also contraindicated within 14 days (2 weeks) of monoamine oxidase inhibitor therapy. It is not recommended for patients with severe hepatic or renal impairment.
