What is Actos prescribed for and what information should you know.

This drug is used for patients with type 2 diabetics to help control high blood sugar and is an oral anti-diabetic drug. This type of diabetes is also known as a non- insulin form of diabetes, for these patients Actos helps to control glycemic and reduces the circulating insulin levels. It also aids in ridding the liver of sugar that the body cannot process.

As with many medicine it is possible that this prescription may be found in a generic form and to be certain a pharmacist or physician should be consulted.

This medicine can be used alone or with insulin’s that are injected, along with other oral anti-diabetic medications including DiaBeta, Micronase and others according to research information, however this needs to be confirmed by the patients physician if it is the correct treatment for them. The dosage that should be taken is prescribed in starting doses of 15 to 30 mg; if this does not correct blood sugar then it can be increased to a maximum of 45 mg per day. Should this not correct the blood sugar then a second medication is often added to help control the blood sugar.

Unlike insulin that needs to be refrigerated this medicine is kept at room temperature and if a dose is missed it should be taken unless it is near to time for the next dose as it is a prescribed medication that is once daily, it can be taken with or without meals.

Side effects associated with prescription based Actos

There are Actos side effects that are common in some patients, however with any prescribed medication they may or may not occur. The more common side effects according to available information are headache, hypoglycemia, respiratory tract infection, sinus inflammation, sore throat and swelling.

There are less common side effects that occur in some patients, allergic reaction, anemia, shortness of breath, and weight gain are some of these along with food or drug reactions.

Using birth control pills may cause a reduction in the effectiveness of this medication when they control ethinyl estradiol, with no rethindrone.

There are two drugs that must be noted by the physician when prescribing this drug, Ketoconazole or generic Nizoral, and also Midazolam or its generic Versed.

This drug should not be taken during pregnancy or during breast-feeding and when planning a pregnancy the physician will change this medication as there is not adiquate research and the level of the blood sugar levels will differ and to keep under control a physician will often prescribe insulin.

For more information about the side effects and dangers we suggest you check online for a review site where patients that have been prescribed this medication discuss side effects and other symptoms on a open forum.
