divalproex information for people that are required to take this medicine

Divalproex is a valproic acid derivative. It is classified as an anticonvulsant drug. This drug is primarily used to manage and treat simple and complex absence seizures, mixed seizure types, complex partial seizures, mania, and migraine headache. It is contraindicated in patients who have hypersensitivity to the drug or to any of its components. It is also contraindicated in patients who have liver problems and in those who have urea cycle disorders. It is not given in children, pregnant women, and lactating women.

Divalproex is thought to bind and inhibit gamma aminobutyric acid (GABA). Its anticonvulsant activity may be related to the increased brain concentrations of GABA (it is an inhibitory neurotransmitter in the CNS). This results to the inhibition of the enzymes that catabolize GABA or prevents the reuptake of GABA into glia and nerve endings. It may also work by suppressing the repetitive neuronal firing through the blockage of voltage-sensitive sodium channels.

The common side effects of this drug are as follows: dizziness, nausea, vomiting, tiredness, tremors, stomach upset, hair loss, and weight gain. The adverse reactions to this drug are the following: Low-grade fever, chest pain, difficulty in breathing, dark-colored urine, clay-colored stools, and jaundice (icteric sclera and yellowish skin).

While a patient is in Divalproex therapy, advise him to take his medication as prescribed by his health care provider. You should also explain to him the importance of attending to his medical check-ups and laboratory tests. This drug comes in an oral tablet. Advise the patient not to chew, crush, or break it. Take it as it is, and he may take it with food or milk to lessen stomach upset. For pregnant women, advise them to notify their doctor about their condition because this drug has potential teratogenic effect on their fetus. For parents of young children, inform them about the serious hepatotoxic effects of this medication in their children.
