Dorzolamide information for people that are required to take this medicine

Dorzolamide Hydrochloride and Timolol Maleate is the generic name marketed under brand name Cosopt. The drug is used to treat glaucoma. Dorzolamide Hydrochloride is both a Sulfonamide derivative and a carbonic anhydrase inhibitor. It functions to reduce the amount of the enzyme carbonic anhydrase. This enzyme is responsible for increasing the amount of aqueous humor produced within the eye. Timolol maleate is a beta adrenergic receptor blocking agent that works to achieve this result as well.

Dorzolamide Hydrochloride and Timolol Maleate then reduces the amount of fluid produced in the eyes leading to a decrease in intraocular pressure. An increase in fluid leads to increase in optic pressure, leading to the symptoms of Glaucoma such as blurred vision, halos around white lights, pain in the forehead and in the orbital area. It can also be used for other conditions that are caused by a high intraocular pressure, such as chronic open-angle glaucoma, and secondary glaucoma.

A drop of Dorzolamide Hydrochloride and Timolol Maleate is enough dosage to be given twice daily. Over dosage of this medication may include symptoms of dizziness, headache, and shortness of breath, bradycardia, bronchospasm, cardiac arrest and possible central nervous system effects. Only apply the exact prescription of your doctor to avoid possibilities of other side effects.

Rare adverse effects of therapy include red eyes, change in the color of the iris, headaches, photophobia, eye pain, irritation, discomfort, dry or watery eyes, inflammation of the front of the eye, darkening and thickening of the eyelashes, swelling of the eyelids, halo vision, dizziness, unpleasant taste, shortness of breath, asthma, changes in blood pressure, slow or irregular heartbeats, bounding pulse, or skin rash. Early detection of these symptoms requires immediate withdrawal from therapy and consultation with the doctor. It is generally not advisable for pregnant and nursing mothers to take this drug.
