Dilantin (Parke-Davis) is the brand name of the generic drug known as Phenytoin. It belongs to the class called Hydantoins. The primary action of hydantoins is by inhibiting the spread of seizure activity in the motor cortex of the brain. Phenytoins help stabilize against hyperexcitability. It is used for the control of grand mal and psychomotor seizures.
It is available as 50 mg oral chewable tablets, and as 30 and 125 m/5mL oral suspensions. These tablets are given initially as 1 gm capsules divided into 3 doses (400 mg, 300 mg, 300 mg) and administered with intervals of 2 hours. A day after this loading dose, normal maintenance dosage is pursued.
