How does Kenalog work? What will Kenalog do for me?

Triamcinolone belongs to the class of medications called corticosteroids. Kenalog is used to treat certain skin conditions, including psoriasis and allergic eczema. It may also be used to relieve itchiness of the vagina, anus, or ear. It acts by reducing inflammation of the skin.

Your doctor may have suggested this medication for conditions other than the ones listed in these drug information articles. If you have not discussed this with your doctor or are not sure why you are taking this medication, speak to your doctor. Do not stop taking Kenalog without consulting your doctor.

How should I use Kenalog?

Kenalog should be applied in small quantities to the affected areas three or four times daily. For some cases of psoriasis and certain other conditions, your doctor may advise you to use an occlusive dressing (a dressing that doesn't breathe) such as plastic wrap for more effective treatment.

Do not let Kenalog get in your eyes. If contact occurs, flush with plenty of water and consult your doctor.

Many things can affect the dose of Kenalog that a person needs, such as body weight, other medical conditions, and other medications. If your doctor has recommended a dose different from the ones given here, do not change the way that you are taking the medication without consulting your doctor.

It is very important that Kenalog be applied exactly as prescribed by your doctor. If you miss a dose of this medication, use it as soon as you remember it. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and carry on with your regular schedule. Do not double doses.

Who should NOT take this medication?

Triamcinolone topical medications should not be used by anyone with:

tuberculosis of the skin

fungal or viral skin lesions

herpes simplex

chickenpox

vaccinia

an allergy to any of the ingredients of the medication

Are there any other precautions or warnings for Kenalog?

Kenalog Adverse effects: Although adverse effects associated with the use of Kenalog are uncommon and not to be expected from ordinary use, sensitization, irritation and failure of therapeutic response have been noticed in rare instances.

Occlusive dressings: If Kenalog is used under an occlusive dressing (those that don't breathe), particularly over extensive areas, enough medication may be absorbed into the bloodstream to cause serious side effects. Do not use dressings that don't breathe unless directed to do so by your doctor.

Pregnancy and breast-feeding: The safety of using triamcinolone while pregnant or nursing have not been established. If used during these times, the benefits should outweigh the possible risks. Pregnant women should not use Kenalog in large amounts or for prolonged periods of time.

What other drugs could interact with Kenalog?

Other topical (skin-applied) medications that contain corticosteroids or that have irritating effects may affect how triamcinolone topical medications work or increase the risk of side effects.

If you are using any medications that fit this description, speak with your doctor or pharmacist. Depending on your specific circumstances, your doctor may want you to:

stop taking one of the medications,

change one of the medications to another,

change how you are taking one or both of the medications, or

leave everything as is.
