Moclobemide information for people that are required to take this medicine

Moclobemide is an antidepressant drug. It is a reversible inhibitor of monoamine oxidase inhibitor type A (RIMA). This medication is intended to relieve the signs and symptoms of depression. This medication is not intended to be given in children and in patients who have allergy to drug or to any of its ingredients. It is also not intended in individuals who have schizophrenia and schizo-affective disorders, acute states of confusion, and tumor of the adrenal gland (pheochromocytoma).
The action of Moclobemide actually involves the selective, reversible inhibition of monoamine oxidase type-A. The inhibition leads to the reduced metabolism and destruction of monoamines (serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine) in the neurotransmitters. This results in an increase monoamines that relieve depression.
For patients who are experiencing severe decreased liver function, bipolar disorder (manic episodes), agitated and excited states, and thyrotoxicosis, this medication must be used cautiously.
Individuals who take this medication may experience dizziness, headache, dry mouth, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, paresthesias, and disturbed sleep as the side effects. On the other hand, rash, itch, agitation, somnolence, visual disturbances, confusion, and edema may be experience by the individual as the possible serious effects of this medication.

In taking Moclobemide, you have to advise the patient to take this medication according to his doctor’s instructions. He may take this medication with food or immediately after meals. The patient must be advised to avoid intake of foods that are rich in amino acid tyramine while he is taking this drug. The combination of this medication with tyramine-rich foods could cause a dangerous increase on the blood pressure. Examples of tyramine-rich foods are cheese, yeast extracts, and fermented soy products. You should also instruct the patient not to stop taking this medication abruptly without talking to his doctor to avoid withdrawal symptoms. You should also advise the patient to avoid alcohol intake throughout the drug therapy.
