Neptazane drug description and what Neptazane is used to treat

Glaucoma is an eye disease characterized by abnormal elevations in the pressure within the eyes. Excessive production of the aqueous humor may eventually lead to blindness if treatment is not initiated. Treatment involves maintenance of the pressure to preserve vision. Medications are a major aspect in glaucoma treatment. Methazolamide, a Sulfonamide derivative, is widely used. Neptazane is a carbonic anhydrase inhibitor which reduces the amount of the protein carbonic anhydrase in the body.

The major work of Neptazane is to reduce the amount of fluid produced in the eyes therefore reducing intraocular pressure. An increase in fluid leads to increase in optic pressure, leading to the symptoms of Glaucoma. It can be used for other conditions that desire a lower intraocular pressure, such as chronic open-angle glaucoma, and secondary glaucoma. It may also be used preoperatively in acute angle-closure glaucoma where low pressure in the eye is needed to reduce risks during surgery. It is well distributed in the plasma, cerebrospinal fluid, red blood cells, and throughout the aqueous humor of the eye.
Implications:

Neptazane should be avoided in people who suffer from cases of adrenal gland failure, kidney disorders, or liver diseases such as cirrhosis and hepatic encephalopathy. It cannot be used when sodium or potassium blood levels are decreased, or when there are other electrolyte problems. This is because potassium excretion is increased upon initial therapy.

Rare adverse effects of therapy include fatigue, loss of appetite, taste alteration, stomach upset, hearing dysfunction, drowsiness, confusion, anaphylaxis, fever, rashes, renal calculi, bone marrow depression, and blood disorders. Early detection of these symptoms requires immediate withdrawal from therapy and consultation with the doctor. To monitor blood levels, CBC and platelet count may be obtained prior to start of therapy. It is generally not advisable for pregnant and nursing mothers to take this drug.
