Olsalazine information for people that are required to take this medicine

Olsalazine is a salicylate anti-inflammatory drug used to treat certain types of bowel diseases known as ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease. However, it does not cure the disease. It can only decrease the symptoms brought about by the disease such as stomach pain, diarrhea and rectal bleeding caused by irritation or swelling of the colon or rectum.

Olsalazine causes gastrointestinal disturbances in persons who take the medicine. Diarrhea occurs in about 1 of every 6 persons who take it; about one in 20 need to discontinue therapy because the diarrhea is severe. Initiating therapy with lower doses could minimize diarrhea and gradually increasing therapy as tolerated. Administration of smaller doses more frequently may also minimize diarrhea. Diarrhea induced by the drug differs from diarrhea due to colitis because of the absence of blood.

Abdominal pain or cramps occur in 1 in 10 persons, and nausea or vomiting occurs in 1 in 20. Heartburn, upper abdominal pain, diarrhea with dehydration, dry mouth, epigastric discomfort, flare in symptoms, flatulence, pancreatitis, increased blood in stool, rectal bleeding, and rectal discomfort have been reported. Other side effects, including dizziness, depression, and headache, occur less frequently than gastrointestinal effects during therapy. Rashes occur in 2.3% of persons and joint pain in 4%.

This medicine may cause stomach bleeding. Daily use of alcohol may increase your risk for stomach bleeding, especially when combined with the drug. Hence, alcohol intake should be minimized or prohibited.
