Pramipexole information for people that are required to take this medicine

Pramipexole is used to manage the signs and symptoms of idiopathic Parkinson’s disease. As a non-ergot-derivative dopamine receptor agonist, it is believed that it can stimulate the dopamine D2 receptors in the striatum. Pramipexole is used with additional care in patients who have renal impairment but not dispensed to those who suffer hypersensitivity. Additional care is also needed by breastfeeding women although it is not yet known if this drug also passes through the production of breast milk.

In taking Pramipexole, you need to be familiar with its side effects and adverse reactions. Nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, headache, dry mouth, stuffy nose, loss of appetite and excessive sweating are the common side effects of this drug. Somnolence, vision changes, urinary frequency, joint or muscle pain, hallucinations, difficulty in swallowing and orthostatic hypotension are the possible adverse reactions to this drug. Some patients reported falling asleep suddenly even without feeling of drowsiness beforehand.

Here are some health teachings that you have to tell the patient who is taking this drug:

Advise the patient not to stop abruptly taking this drug without the knowledge of his doctor. If there is a need to stop the drug, the doctor may reduce the dosage gradually, before completely stopping it. Encourage the patient to take this drug with food most especially when nausea or loss of appetite occurs. Instruct the patient to avoid alcohol intake and other CNS depressants while on this drug therapy. Advise the patient not to drive a car or refrain from doing hazardous activities because drowsiness may occur. Advise him to change his position (from sitting or lying to standing) gradually. This will help to minimize the occurrence of orthostatic hypotension. Encourage the patient to chew sugarless candies or a hard candy to relieve dryness of mouth.
