How should I use Stievamycin?
Apply Stievamycin to the affected area once a day before bedtime. The area should be thoroughly cleansed with a mild soap, and dried, followed by application of the Stievamycin gel in a gentle rubbing motion, using fingertips to apply medication. Wash your hands after using the Stievamycin gel. Application may be accompanied by a temporary feeling of warmth or a stinging sensation.
Stievamycin is intended for external use only and should
be kept away from the eyes, nose, mouth, and other easily
irritated areas. Do not apply Stievamycin to eyelids or to
the skin at the corners of the eyes and mouth. Avoid the angles
of the nose and nasolabial fold (the groove between the nose
and the lip). If treatment in these areas is necessary, apply
Stievamycin very sparingly.
What side effects are possible with Stievamycin?
The skin of certain sensitive individuals, particularly those with fair complexion, may become excessively red, swollen, blistered, or crusted when exposed to this product. Pain, burning sensation, tenderness, irritation, and itching have also been occasionally reported. Do not over-apply this gel. Doing so will not speed up treatment but only increase the risk of irritation to the skin. If any of these effects occur, call the doctor for further instruction.
Are there any other precautions or warnings for Stievamycin?
Stievamycin and Eczema: Tretinoin has been reported to cause severe irritation of eczematous skin and should only be used with utmost caution by people with this condition.
Stievamycin and Pregnancy: Skin-applied tretinoin should be used by women capable of becoming pregnant only after birth control counselling. It should not be used by pregnant women.
The safety of erythromycin during pregnancy has not been established. Erythromycin crosses the placental barrier.
Stievamycin and Breast-feeding: It is unknown whether tretinoin is excreted in human milk, but erythromycin is. A decision should be made whether to discontinue nursing or to discontinue the drug, taking into account the importance of the drug to the mother.
Stievamycin and Overgrowth of organisms: The use of preparations containing antibiotics may be associated with overgrowth of organisms not killed by those antibiotics. If the condition gets worse or does not improve in the expected amount of time, contact your doctor.
Stievamycin and Sun exposure: Excessive exposure to sunlight or ultraviolet rays (sun lamps) should be avoided during treatment with this gel because the extra radiation may lead to a more intense action. If sun exposure is unavoidable, use a sunscreen with minimum SPF 15.
If a sunburn occurs, it is a good idea to stop therapy until the severe reddening and peeling subside. Those whose occupations require considerable exposure to the sun should be particularly careful.
