Armour Thyroid (desiccated) is a thyroid hormone. Its action is not clearly defined but it stimulates the metabolism of all body tissues by accelerating the rate of cellular oxidation. It is also used to treat severe hypothyroidism with an initial dose of 15 mg by mouth daily that increases every two weeks until desired dose is obtained.
For congenital severe hypothyroidism in children older than twelve years old, an initial dose of 90 mg is given daily. For children six to twelve years old an initial dose of 60 mg is given.
