Trusopt Ophth is manufactured by Merck Frosst Ltd. This medicine is a carbonic anhydrase inhibitor used in the eye to treat glaucoma.
How does Trusopt work?
Trusopt is used to treat disorders where there is an increased
build up of pressure within the eye, such as glaucoma. The
eye has two fluid filled spaces, and if too much fluid is
produced (or not enough is allowed to drain away) this can
lead to an increase in pressure (intraocular pressure - IOP)
within the eye. Such increases in pressure can damage the
eye leading to loss of sight.
Trusopt belongs to a group of medicines called carbonic anhydrase
inhibitors. These medicines block the action of an enzyme
in the body called carbonic anhydrase.
Carbonic anhydrase is usually responsible for the production
of bicarbonate in the body. Bicarbonate is required for the
production of the watery fluid (aqueous humour) that fills
the space in the front of the eye. As dorzolamide blocks the
production of bicarbonate, it also blocks the production of
aqueous humour. This results in a decrease in the amount of
aqueous humour filling the front space of the eye, hence reducing
the intraocular pressure within the eye.
Trusopt is given as eye drops so that it may act directly
where it is needed.
