Valcyte can also be used in the prevention of Cytomegalovirus Disease in organ transplant recipients. The drug can be used in patients receiving kidney, heart, or kidney-pancreas organs. Unfortunately, Valcyte cannot be used in patients born with Cytomegalovirus. Upon administration of the drug, Valcyte is converted to ganciclovir by hepatic and intestinal enzymes, it inhibits replication of cytomegalovirus.
For patients receiving Valcyte for the initial treatment of Cytomegalovirus Retinitis, patients who are old enough to receive the adult dose of Valcyte receive 900 mg of the drug 2 times a day for the duration of 14 to 21 days. In order to prevent relapse, a maintenance dose is required, usually 900 mg is given once a day.
Pediatric patient receiving Valcyte to prevent Cytomegalovirus after organ transplant surgery, with an age range of 4 months old to 16 years old, should start receiving Valcyte within 10 days after the organ transplant surgery. It should also be given for 100 days after surgery. For adult patients receiving kidney-pancreas, they should start the treatment with Valcyte within 10 days post surgery up to 100 days post surgery.
